Nearby Attractions & Traveller Information
The Deep South region of southern Saskatchewan offers much in the way of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Ogema is at the heart of this region, located along the historic Red Coat Trail. This trail, which runs from Winnipeg, MB to Fort MacLeod, AB, was used by the Northwest Mounted Police starting in the 19th century, and later by early settlers. It has since become Highway #13, linking communities throughout southern Saskatchewan.
Town of Ogema and R.M. of Key West
Ogema’s feature attraction, the Southern Prairie Railway has been taking tourists for a ride on the rails since 2012. The only tourist train of its kind in Saskatchewan, the Southern Prairie Railway allows passengers to experience the past through a ride in its vintage passenger car pulled by a vintage ----engine. The SPR has also brought a landmark back to the bottom of Ogema’s main street – a train station. For more information….SPR website link.
Though the DSPM contains many of Ogema’s historic buildings, the town itself still preserves several heritage properties in their original locations. A drive or stroll down Main Street reveals fragments of the past. There is the brick fire hall, and across from it the fire wall. The BP station…mural…grandstand in the park….sports hall of fame….
As well, there are many beautiful sites in the R.M. of Key West, including country churches, ghost towns, and schoolhouses. Since many of these are accessible only by gravel roads and may be located on private property, we encourage you to visit us in person for information on visiting some of these sites.
